Tories accused of highways complacency

The Conservatives have been accused of complacency over the state of roads and pavements in Gloucester.

Councillor Jeremy Hilton said there was an £80 million backlog of repairs for highways across Gloucestershire.

And he criticised the Conservative cabinet member for complacency over the state of the roads - highlighting several in the city that need fixing.

Councillor Hilton, leader of Gloucester Liberal Democrats, said: "The Tories continue to peddle the myth that they are improving the state of our roads. They aren't.

"We can see the potholes for ourselves. They are everywhere. After 16 years of Tory rule at the county council we still have a backlog of over £80 million pounds worth of repairs.

"There is also a big issue with the terrible state of our footways.

"There is one clear answer, we need a Lib Dem controlled council, then we can tackle the potholes on Elmleaze, Cromwell Street and Barnwood Road for example.

"The promised repairs of concrete roads such as Denmark Road, Colebridge Avenue, May Tree Square and the northern service road at Estcourt Road still haven't begun.

"The complacency of the cabinet member is unbelievable."
