A Liberal Democrat councillor has welcomed a Government announcement to double funding to help end homelessness.

Ending rough sleeping was one of Andy Burnham's first promises when he entered Downing Street, announcing a £442 million package to provide emergency accommodation and practical support.

Councillor Rebecca Trimnell, who represents Westgate on Gloucester City Council and Gloucestershire County Council, said: “This additional investment is very welcome. As a city centre councillor, I see first-hand the reality of rough sleeping and the impact it has on individuals and the wider community.

“No-one should have to sleep on the streets, particularly as we head into the coldest months of the year, so the Government’s ambition to give everyone a route off the streets by Christmas is one we should all support.

“But getting somebody off the street for a few nights cannot be the end of it. People need secure accommodation and sustained support to rebuild their lives and prevent them returning to the streets.

“We also need to recognise that rough sleeping is not always visible, particularly among women who may sleep in places where they are less likely to be seen because of concerns for their safety.

“The Government has made a clear promise and committed substantial funding to deliver it. It must now make sure Gloucester receives its fair share and that the money reaches the councils, charities, housing providers and outreach teams doing the work on the ground.

“This is an ambitious commitment which deserves our support, but the Government must now deliver on it. For Gloucester, that must mean fewer people sleeping rough and more people getting the long-term help they need to build a secure future.”
