A few months ago Gloucestershire County Council resurfaced Horton Road from its junction of London Road to the Aspen Centre. Now the county council is to complete the work, which Councillor Jeremy Hilton previously requested. This will be a section from the Aspen Medical Centre to the junction with Great Western Road. The planned start of the work is from January 26 to February 1, with the roadworks taking place between 7pm to 7am, excluding weekends. Councillor Hilton, pictured left when the first part of the road was finished, said: "I'm really pleased that this work is now taking place. "The dates are subject to weather conditions and I ask those that need to use Horton Road to be patient. The contractors are very efficient. "Once the new surface is down the road marking will be repainted. The current ones are badly faded to the extent drivers may be breaking traffic regulations without knowing it."
Liberal Democrat campaigners' Dr Rebecca Trimnell and Councillor Jeremy Hilton have been told by Sainsbury's that their Northgate Street store is set to close on January 30. The news comes after a petition of nearly 700 signatures was raised opposing the stores closure after 50 years of trading. Councillor Hilton said: "This is very disappointing news. Loads of people living in Kingsholm and the city centre enjoyed shopping here. I remember working at the store as a teenager when it first opened and I have been a regular customer ever since." Dr Rebecca Trimnell confirmed that both she and Councillor Hilton met a senior representative Sainsbury to lobby on behalf of the petitioners. "We did have a constructive meeting with Sainsbury's and some of our suggestions were considered further, but back in December we received confirmation that sadly the store will close," Dr Trimnell said. "This week they have told us the store is mostly likely to close on January 30. It really does feel like the end of an era." Cou

Liberal Democrat councillors on Gloucester City Council have launched a "call-in" of the ruling Conservative administration's decision to rule out taking waste services back under direct council control - accusing them of "political bias". At a meeting of the cabinet last week, Tory councillors rejected the option of bringing household bin collections, recycling, street cleaning and grounds maintenance back in-house - claiming the move was "unaffordable". Currently these services are provided by Amey under a controversial 15-year contract which is due to run until 2022. Instead the council cabinet wants to decide between extending the contract with Amey, who are due to be taken over by Urbaser Ltd, or using waste company Ubico, which runs collections and street cleaning in other parts of Gloucestershire. The cabinet has delayed a decision until the end of January next year to allow Urbaser - who operates the Javelin Park incinerator in partnership with Balfour Beatty - to finalise its offer to the council. A petition calling for the protection of family homes in Kingsholm has been handed into the city council. Lib Dem councillor Jeremy Hilton said there was much concern about the number of homes now being converted into Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO). Currently, family homes converted into HMOs for six persons or fewer do not require planning permission, as it is permitted development. Family homes are being converted into properties suitable for renting and this can lead to issues with noise, rubbish and parking. There can also be problems with getting landlords to deal with incidents of anti-social behaviour. Earlier this year, Kingsholm councillors Jeremy Hilton and Isabel Brazil tried to amend the council's work plan to start on the survey work, which is required as precursor to getting an Article 4 Direction. But the Tories voted it down. An Article 4 Direction would require all conversions to HMO's to have planning permission. In addressing the cabinet, Councillor Hilton urged that the cabinet start
