Another historic monument in Gloucester has been covered in four-letter swear words by graffiti vandals.

They used black spray paint to daub words such as ‘f***’ on the remains of Greyfriars, which is located behind the Eastgate Street shopping centre.

The latest attack comes just two months after St Oswald’s Priory suffered a similar fate.

Councillor Rebecca Trimnell, who represents Westgate ward on the city council, learnt of the latest vandalism on Wednesday.

“I was dismayed to hear yet again that vandals have targeted one of Gloucester’s historic monuments,” she said.

“This is the second time in just two months that a gem in the city’s heritage has been damaged in such a mindless way.

“It is deeply disappointing to see so many four-letter obscenities desecrating Greyfriars, which comes weeks after St Oswald’s Priory was damaged in a similar manner.

“Enough is enough and the perpetrators need to be caught.

“The Conservative-run city council needs to be doing a lot more to protect Gloucester’s heritage from such wanton vandalism.

“I am pleased to hear a Heritage Watch Scheme is being set up in the city to try and ensure this does not happen again.

“I would urge anyone with any information about the incident to contact the police.”

Greyfriars was founded by Franciscan monks in 1231 but the current church dates from the 16th century.

In the 17th century Greyfriars was severely damaged by Royalist forces during the siege of Gloucester and only the nave and its north aisle survived.
